There is no getting away from it, some kind of bikes are attractive to the thieves. Across Britain the most desirable ones are scooters, followed by certain sports bikes

When you are thinking of buying a bike

• If it’s too cheap there probably is a very good reason for it.
• Don’t meet someone in a pub car park or a motorway service station, go to his/her house.
• On that same vein, make sure it is their house and not just parked outside. Have they gone into the house? If not why not?
• Does the bike have a Frame Number or Engine Number? If not or they don’t match then walk away and call the number below.
• Always check the Log Book (V5C) very carefullt. No Log Book, walk away.
• Any doubts or concerns then don’t buy; it could save you a lot of heartache later.

If Selling

• Do not let the prospective buyer ride your bike, even if he offers you his keys as security, Are you really sure the bike he turned up on is his?
• If he must, then take him on the back with you riding, not the other way around.
• Why not take their picture, easy done with modern cameras and phones.
• Ask for a contact number, preferably a Land Line, not a mobile and give him a call back to tell them when they can come and see it.
• Finally do not release the bike before the Bank have confirmed the funds.

Always use a good quality lock and chain and always try to fasten to some immovable object when you leave it parked, use the bike parking bays in the town centre car parks when shopping.

Consider an alarm and security marking such as Datatag or Smart Water.

It is not unusual for thieves to follow you home. Always keep an eye on your mirrors, look out for unfamiliar vehicles in the street and maybe write the registration numbers down - you never know.

If you have a garage then use it. Don’t leave your bike parked out on your drive for long periods, especially if you live on a busy road. A lot of insurance companies wont pay out if it is stolen off your drive when it could have been in the garage.
